In the world, there are always misconceptions regarding religion and religious matters. Hindu religion is no exception to this.
one of the Biggest misconceptions around Hindu religion I come across is of having "33 crores God and Goddess ".
And this is popular among both Indians and foreigners, Hindus and non-Hindus.
When I was younger, I too believed in this. Then cow movement gets popular and this image become well-known and household photo.
With this photo message of "Cow is home to all gods" got spread and some interpreted it as 33 crore god and goddess live in cow"
Then one question stuck in my mind in the photo there is only few god or goddess and they say 33 crores, god or goddess abide in cows.
For many years I had no answer to my curiosity then I got the one day watching a clip of show "Tenalirama" on SAB TV.
The origin of this misconception is due to the wrong interpretation or translation of "Koti" which have two meaning One is crore and other is Kind(type).
When in Vedas they talk about 33 Koti Devi-Devata they mean 33 kinds of Devi-Devata.
These are 8 Vasu, 11 Rudra, 12 Aditya, Indra and Prajapati( In some shastra they consider Ashwini and Kumar in place of Indra and Prajapati).
Name of Ashtavasus - 1. Aap 2. Dhruv 3. Som 4. Dhar 5. Anil 6. Anal 7. Pratyush 8. Prbhaash
Name of eleven Rudras - 1. Manu 2. Manyu 3. Shiv 4. Mahat 5. Ritudhvaj 6. Mahinas 7. Umrateras 8. kaal 9. Vaamdev 10. Bhav 11. Dhriat-dhvaj
